Prince George’s County Graduate Chapter
(The History)
In 2003, A group of Fellowmen, mostly alumni of BSU began meeting monthly. This group consisted of the Fl. Gregory Jones, Fl. Bernard Douglas, Fl. Michael S. Hughes, Fl. John A. Word, Fl. Marvin Gibson, Fl. Gary Stoner, Fl. Frank Ausby and Fl. Larry Williams (Deceased). After the Chapter was formed, Fl. Alvin G. Pindell was one of the 1st “Bowie Brothers” to join.
The focus of these meetings was to build a plot on the campus, support undergraduate growth and to reunite all the Fellowmen who were initiated at Bulldog I (Bowie State) Chapter. The Prince George’s County Graduate Chapter was an outgrowth of these meetings.
Fl. Gregory A. Jones, a member of Groove Phi Groove SFI since 1976, graduated from Bowie State University in 1980. After graduating, he worked and lived in various places around the world. After returning to Washington, D.C. he renewed his graduate membership and the National administration, at that time, put Baltimore/Columbia Graduate Chapter on his membership card. Fl. Jones attended several local graduate chapter meetings while living in D.C.
Fl. Jones continuously questioned why there were no active undergraduate chapters in the region for the past 20 years. Fl. Jones inquired with Fl. Ronnie White, former National President for advice on starting a new graduate chapter. Fl. White gave the details and requirements on what it would take to start a new graduate chapter. At first the proposal was to name the new chapter the Bowie Graduate Chapter but Fl. White suggested a larger area of coverage for eligible members. Consequently, Prince George's County Graduate Chapter was decided upon as the name of the new chapter.
The chapter met primarily at the home of Fl. Word with the following goals in mind:
1.) Establish authorized membership as a graduate chapter with Groove Phi Groove SFI and Bowie University
2.) Reactivate the Bowie State undergrad chapter and ensure maintenance of the chapter and consistency of intake
3.) Establish a new area on which to build a plot on the campus of Bowie State University
4.) Establish a mentoring relationship with Bulldog I Chapter
5.) Establish projects to enhance the Fellowships relationship with the university and the community
The proposed charter group needed 5 financial members, a charter and submission to the National Conclave for approval.
The founding members were:
Fl. Bernard W. Douglas
Fl. Gregory A. Jones
Fl. Michael S. Hughes
Fl. Larry Williams (Deceased)
Fl. John A. Word
The request to become a chapter was presented by Fl. Bernard Douglas at the 2005 Conclave. The Prince George’s County Graduate Chapter was voted on and approved at the National Conclave on July 15, 2005 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
